NEW DATE SET FOR DISTRICT ASSEMBLY AND UNIT COMMITTEE ELECTIONS (DLE)

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has set Tuesday, 1st September, 2015 as the new date for District Assembly and Unit Committee Elections in all electoral areas and units except those in the Lower Manya Krobo district in the Eastern Region.

In a recent statement issued by Mr. Amadu Sulley, Deputy Chairman (operations) of the Electoral Commission (EC), preparations for the conduct of the District Assembly and Unit Committee elections has resumed. The statement further outlined details of the preparations with guidelines as follows:

  • Filling of nominations by District Assembly candidates will take place on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd July, 2015
  • Filling of nominations for the Unit Committee elections - Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th July, 2015 for.
  • The nominations will be taken from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm each day.
  • Nomination forms may be obtained at the District Offices of the Commission or from the Deputy Returning Officer (Special Duties) in the electoral area.
  • All duly completed nomination forms must be submitted to the Deputy Returning Officer (Special Duties) on the dates set aside as nomination days.
  • A person can contest either the District Assembly Election or the Unit Committee Election but not both elections.
  • Prospective candidates are to note that no fee shall be paid for obtaining the nomination forms or for filing to contest the elections.
  • All prospective candidates are to submit four (4) copies of a recent photograph of bust size with red background, showing the full face and both ears.
  • All interested and qualified persons who want to contest any of the elections are to take note and act accordingly.

The Elections which were originally scheduled for 3rd March, 2015 were called off by order of the Supreme Court. The call-off arose from a suit filed at the court against the EC by one Mr. Benjamin Eyi Mensah, an aspiring Assembly Member, that he was denied the oppor-tunity to file his nomination to contest although he met all conditions legally required to contest, and that the EC closed nominations before the maturation of the Constitutional Instrument (CI) 85. The Supreme Court ruled in favour of the petitioner that EC’s action was “unconstitutional” and ordered it to conduct the elections afresh.
