News Release on 19th Biennial Delegates Conference



The National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) has successfully ended its 19th Biennial National Delegates Conference in Sunyani in the Brong-Ahafo Region of Ghana.

The three-day conference which took place from the 9th to 11th of March, 2016, was on the theme "Localising the Post-2015 Agenda: The role of MMDAs in the Effective Delivery of the SDGs in Ghana".

The Conference was attended by 1080 delegates representing all 216 assemblies in the country.

Speaking at the Conference, Hon. Collins Dauda, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) commended NALAG for its contribution in projecting Decentralisation in Ghana. The Minister encouraged the delegates to deepen into the local government system and to choose accountable leaders who will enhance the development of NALAG at all levels in the country. Touching on the SDG’s, he outlined that the overall goal of sustainable development is to improve the quality of life of people and to increase the participation of all stakeholders. The delegates were urged to go back home much more determined than before whiles aiming at non–politicization of development programmes, focusing on a long-term approach, increasing transparency and accountability.

The Conference also attracted seasoned resource persons from various stakeholders who made presentations on the theme. Among the stakeholders included: Dr. Esther Offei Aboagye, "The 17 Sustainable Development Goals and their 169 targets that are aimed to be implemented by local and district level actors or on local level"; Dr. Joseph Siaw, Executive Chairman of Zoomlion Group of Companies, "Role of Zoomlion in Providing Sustainable Solutions to Ghana’s Environmental Sanitation Challenges”; Mr. Ekkehardt, GIZ consultant, “Street Naming and Property Addressing (SNPA)"

High on the agenda of the Conference was the election of seven National Executive Council officers to join the ten Regional Representatives who were elected during the Regional Conferences to constitute the National Executive Council of the Association to serve a two year term.

Hon. Isaac Ashai Odamtten, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) was elected as the new president to succeed Hon. Alhaji Mohammed Kwaku Doku, Municipal Chief Executive of Asunafo North Municipal Assembly in the Brong Ahafo Region.

He polled 624 votes out the 980 total valid votes cast to beat his sole contestant, Hon. James Gunu, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Akatsi North who had 356. Other members elected to various positions to serve on the National Executive Council for the next two years were Hon. Stanislaus Kadingdi, the MCE for Kasenna-Nankana in the Upper East Region, first Vice-President and Hon. Louisa Amanor, an Assembly Member (AM) at the New Juabeng Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region, the second Vice-President.

Hon. Wisdom Kwasi Zor, the Presiding Member (PM) for the Pru District Assembly in the Brong-Ahafo Region and Hon. Samuel Richard Ziggah of the Agona East District Assembly in the Central Region, were elected as trustees.

Hon. Rita Odoley Sowah, the MCE for La Dade-Kotopon in the Greater Accra Region and Hon. Rita Akosua Awatey, an AM at the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region were also elected unopposed as the treasurer and women’s caucus representative respectively.

The peaceful election was supervised by a team of electoral officials from the Brong-Ahafo Regional office of the Electoral Commission (EC) led by Mr. Samuel Boadu, a Deputy Regional Director.
